'09 Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks

Tent Rocks is located approximately 52 miles north of Albuquerque along Interstate I-25. Vicki, Warren, Gene Brookover (brother-in-law) and Moppet hiked the Cave Loop trail and part of the Canyon Loop trail on cool and windy Feb 16, 2009.

Geologic formations in the Monument are comprised of pumice, ash and tuff deposits over 1,000 feet thick from volcanic eruptions 6 to 7 million years ago.

These are "Tent Rocks", the formations from which the Monument received its name. They are also known as 'hoodoos'.

Hillside showing hoodoos in different stages of weathering. Some still have their hard basalt hats. Others have almost disappeared into the hillside.
